The Southern Oregon Nordic Ski Club offers cross country skiing in Southern Oregon. Where the Siskiyous meet the Cascades. Southern Oregon Nordic skiers are blessed with a ring of snow surrounding the Rogue Valley during winter months.
The Southern Oregon ski season typically starts by early December and sometimes as early as the first week of November. Snow cover in the local area starts to thin by mid March, but some skiers are willing to travel to nearby Mt. Shasta and Crater Lake. Telemark skiers interested in climbing Mt. McLaughlin and Mt. Scott may extend their ski season into April, May and beyond. Here is a schedule of upcoming local outings for the Southern Oregon Nordic Ski Club:
Dec 13: Novice ski tour; location depends on snow conditions easy four to six miles. For information, call David at 541-512-0436.
Dec 16: Intermediate ski tours will be held every Wednesday starting Dec. 16, weather permitting. Locations will vary depending on snow conditions. For information, call Stefanie at 541-776-3987.
Dec 19: Intermediate ski tour; Fish Lake (Highway 140), eight miles. For information, call John at 541-601-5687. Holiday potluck party follows (optional).
Dec 27: Advanced ski tour, Dutton Ridge, in Crater Lake National Park; 12-plus miles. For information, call John at 541-601-5687.
Jan 9: Learn to skate ski every Saturday through Feb. 13 with Southern Oregon Nordic Ski Club instructor Michael Dawkins. Call 541-482-2703 for locations and more information.
