Joy robbing should be a crime. Lets face it, life is hard enough all by itself. But when circumstances come along and add a pinch of emotional drama to the mix, it spells a recipe for thievery... aka... joy robbing.
This past week was a doozy. Three of my dearest and closest friends fell under attack. One lost a loved one to suicide. Another is helplessly watching a brother succumb to an incurable disease. Another lost their home. And sadly, one of my favorite Rainers is feeling an overwhelming sense of loss from recent tragic events.
Why do bad things happen to good people? It's a mystery that we'll never solve. Misfortune, pain and tragedy rains on everyone. Perhaps in some strange way we can take solace in that. Adversity connects us.
The thief who stole my joy cannot steal my character... nor the love that I have for friends and family, nor the courage, faith and determination that resides deep within my soul. These are the ties that bind and propel each one of us to move forward in the midst of adversity.
A nugget of truth... Hide your precious possessions in your heart where thieves cannot steal and moths cannot destroy. The heart has an uncanny capacity to store unlimited amounts of joy for hurting souls in times of crisis. When the rain stops and the storm passes, we shall once again say... It is well with my soul.
